A couple of weeks ago marked 140 years of Japanese immigration to Argentina, and my former Japanese history professor put together an exhibition to celebrate the anniversary There are a few interesting things about this migration history that I’d like to highlight 1. Many of the early Japanese immigrants didn’t come directly from Japan. They arrived from other Latin American countries, especially Brazil and Peru. Poor working conditions pushed many of them to look for better opportunities in Argentina. This is known as secondary migration 2. Japanese immigration to Argentina took place in two main waves: the first from the late 19th century through the 1930s, and the second after WWII, between the 1940s and 1960s. Many of the early immigrants came from Okinawa, where poverty, limited farmland and economic hardship brought on by Japan’s rapid modernization (read: westernization) pushed people to seek opportunities abroad
