I love in-person voting. It’s nice to be around people who give a fuck 🫡

  • Same! It was always an event. I’d take my daughter with me. My voting location was always at this assisted living facility. Would take my daughter and she would get cookies from the elderly ladies and a sticker and we would go out to dinner afterwards

this is such a sweet memory honestly, taking your daughter along and her getting cookies and a sticker from the ladies there — those little traditions are the ones you remember years later. and dinner afterwards sounds like the perfect way to round it off

  • wait!!! you guys can literally vote from home???

yes if you want, they send the ballot to your house and you can put it in the mail (with confirmation email/text updates on when it's received back at the voting center and counted) or you can fill it out and drop it off in a box at the election place on election day and skip the lines or sometimes there are official drop boxes at specific monitored locations etc

This is so nice and better for people. You can skip long queues, seniors are at ease. This is not possible at all in india. Our traditional systems are rigged, and there has been a protest happening around it basically for stealing votes.

In WA you can’t vote in person at all

Yeah, the agencies which issue Id's and other official documents coordinate with the election agencies. They issue each registered citizen voter information and ballots ahead of the election, and assign an in-person polling place in their town/neighborhood which keeps copies of everyone's ID information in case they don't have it. So everyone has multiple options for voting and ballot drop-off, and every person's ballot is counted only once. It might seem unfamiliar in places with uncoordinated election agencies, multiple ID systems, or other gaps in knowledge about who actually lives where and is entitled to vote. But in the US, that information is very well-known to all parts of the government. For better or worse. The downside is that it can be very hard to get ID replaced if lost or expired (which makes it hard to do everyday things). The paperwork, bureaucracy and expense means not everyone has access to identification.

Getting ballots by mail sounds superb. In India we use EVMs, so you have to be present at your booth to vote. There’s also an ongoing debate about EVM security, and some groups are calling for more transparency and reforms at the Election Commission. Where India does well is cost and enrollment getting on the voter list is nearly free and well coordinated. In other areas, it fails miserable and there’s still a lot of room for improvement. not to mention the timely deletion of Muslim votes to favor the in power BJP government

Thankfully, we have not been marginalised like other less priviledged muslim communities unlike them we have a great financial, Political and Local community backing which we have nurtured over the years.

Exactly. So much of my work is internet nonsense. It’s nice to do something real among actual people.
