29 Seconds of @balajis.eth on /gmfarcaster ... What did you miss? A 2.5 hr marathon...here's your 29 seconds+ * In one sentence: Crypto civilization not crypto anarchy. Anarchy is better than totalitarianism but it leaves you out in the forest with no home. You need to re-civilize which is basically civilization. * The Farcaster 'meme' is not building or trading, but earning--or earn and learn. * I (balajis) don't believe the world needs another social network, another crypto trading app, or even another uncensored anything. * We want a thank you culture, not a *blank* you culture. Be polite or go find another client. There will be FCC broadcast standards (American TV & radio standards for what can air on broadcast TV)--figuratively speaking. A lot of freedom of speech complaints are actually freedom of attack desires--the equivalent of walking up to someone and yelling in there face. * It will be a community of communities among different network state communities--a large but not infinite tent. Others will be free to use the protocol (hopefully open sourced) to build their own communities. * 271 people were banned. 100 filed an appeal and ~67 of those were reinstated. By implication 171 did not appeal, and ~23 who appealed were not reinstated. Blocks and mutes played a role in who was banned especially relative to number of followers. * The terms of service were always in place on FC, but they weren't policed. If you are coming in and going to enforce standards, it doesn't matter how you do it, people are going to complain. We did it up front and clear. * The history of FC is (the arrival of) Friends (dan's) --> Farmers --> Flood --> Foes -> Finished --> (Hopefully) Phoenix * In the latter phases above, running FC was a thankless job ... a lot of good people left because of the attacks. People have 'learned' in social media that the way to resolve a dispute is to get online, frame it in the most incendiary terms possible, rouse a big mob, humiliate the other guy into submission and get clicks and engagement for it. * FC will be about blue ocean things not red ocean things. [AI note: Blue ocean things represent unthemed, uncontested market spaces where competition is irrelevant, while red ocean things represent existing, crowded industries where companies fight for market share]. 'I don't care about DAUs' * Self Improvement and learn and earn every day online. Opportunities to prove onchain your crypto credentials that will open new opportunities to earn. Take a proctored ETH SAT test, pass and receive an NFT that proves you are ready for new opportunities to earn as an ETH dev. * You have a crypto resume and crypto credentials with growing opportunities to learn and earn. Self growth and self improvement. • Very well recapped, Brad. Unless you 100 % agree with what he said, i would recommend not using the first person (singular and plural) in the bullet points, though. Some of the things he said were at best half truths. For example the thank you culture vs blank you culture point. I completely disagree with that. There is an entire world in between being performatively polite and yelling in someone's face. I believe on Farcaster, we had a culture where we could have a heated debate and still be friends. In the interview, it just sounded like everybody who was not polite, was simply a raging idiot. Many other points were also quite simplistic or simply untrue. Like the so-called fact that Foucault was a pedophile. I don't know whether he was, but the actual facts are that there has only been one person who has made that alegation, and did that without any proof. Also, I wonder if you recognise Farcaster in the last months in the statement "People have 'learned' in social media that the way to resolve a dispute is to get online, frame it in the most incendiary terms possible, rouse a big mob, humiliate the other guy into submission and get clicks and engagement for it." I personally don't. Sure, strong opinions. Sometimes strongly put forward. But is that really such a bad thing, and it was also not how Farcaster was. At least, I don't recognise that version. Anyway. As said: good recap. But again, my adivce would be to keep an eye on your phrasing. 27000 uci

I always read these as if Brad is reporting news, not as if he agrees with everything. I always assumed everyone read his recaps that way so it's interesting that you point that out.

  • Was there actually a time of mass exodus because people here were just so mean?

    Never

The people of Farcaster have never been like that. Disagreements? Isolated incidents? Sure. However, the hate-filled groups and people and rage bait influencers that you commonly see on X and, from what I hear on Bluesky to a lesser extent, those groups never made their way to Farcaster in any of its seasons or iterations.

Crypto twitter culture is the sole reason I disengaged with crypto for years! Looking at the statements he’s made about Farcaster’s culture, he’s literally describing X. Being introduced to Farcaster is the only reason why I interact with crypto/web3 today, it’s such a kinder space. I didn’t know it in its prime, but in this last year I have learned about microwaves, commercial refrigeration, menopause, vibe coding, DAUs, the definition of "permissionless," so much about the actual functionality of AI beyond generating a picture of yourself as a 17th century pop star 🤣 I have gained nothing but actual value here and it’s so disappointing to see the people who are actually intentional about their activity get punishment actual abusers on other platforms don’t even get 😭

Plus, if someone is not worried about DAU why they concerned about why people are leaving?

lol no. at best, that's historical revisionism. but mostly he's just lying to sell memberships.

Maybe one person in particular wasn’t courteous to him on here and he devised this entire plan over the following years to buy the platform specifically to ban their account and we all got caught in the crosshairs. But also idk because both of these ladies are sitting there nodding so it’s like…..what is this Mandela effect of some people (like 4) remembering the fearful years of Farcaster anarchy and everyone else thinking everything was fine 😅
